MALVERN, Pa., April 30, 2026鈥 The start of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is just a month away and the听听is recommending听homeowners,听condo owners,听renters听and听business owners听prepare now.
听
Led by Colorado State University (CSU) senior research scientist Phil Klotzbach, Ph.D., a non-resident scholar at Triple-I,听the CSU TC-RAMS Team forecasts 鈥渁 slightly below average鈥 season with 13 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.听A Atlantic hurricane season听has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The Atlantic Basin season begins on June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.
听
鈥凄耻谤颈苍驳 , everyone who lives in a hurricane-prone community should take a few moments to ensure they have adequate financial protection for their property and possessions, while also taking steps to make their home or business more resilient to the impacts of wind and water,鈥 said Triple-I CEO Sean Kevelighan.
听
鈥淗istory has proven states along the Gulf and East coasts face the prospect of catastrophic, hurricane-caused property damage. With more Americans living in harm鈥檚 way than ever before, it is critical for everyone residing in a hurricane-prone community to make preparedness a priority for the upcoming season,鈥 Kevelighan added.
听
, spearheaded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), starts on Sunday, May 3, and continues through Saturday, May 9.
听
Triple-I鈥檚 key hurricane preparedness tips for the 2026 season include:
听
Review Your 精东影业 Coverage:听Make sure you have the right type 鈥 and amount 鈥 of property insurance. The Triple-I recommends you conduct an听annual insurance review听of your policy(ies) with your insurance professional.
听
鈥淲ith home replacement costs escalating due to the higher costs of construction materials and labor, you should ask your insurance professional if you have the right amount of coverage to rebuild or repair your home, to replace its contents, and to cover temporary living expenses if your property is uninhabitable,鈥 Kevelighan said. 鈥淵ou should also ask about听flood insurance,听which is an additional coverage to standard听homeowners,听condo听and听renters听policies, as well as a听small business insurance听policy. Nearly 90% of U.S. natural disasters involve flooding so most areas of the country are prone to flooding.鈥
听
The best place to start an听insurance review process is by reading the听declarations page听of your policy. It offers details on how much coverage you have, your deductibles, and how a claim will be paid.
听
Standard homeowners insurance听covers the structure of your house for disasters such as hurricanes and windstorms, along with a host of other perils, such as fire. It is important to understand the elements that might affect your insurance payout after a hurricane and adjust your policies accordingly.
听
Flood insurance, which is a separate policy from your property coverage, is offered through听 and dozens of听private insurers. Keep in mind that in recent years, landfalling hurricanes have also led to catastrophic inland flooding.
听
Protect Your Vehicles:听Comprehensive auto, which is an optional coverage, protects your vehicle against theft and damage caused by an incident other than a collision, including fire, flood, vandalism, hail, falling rocks or trees, and other hazards. Nearly 80% of U.S. drivers opt to purchase comprehensive coverage.
听
Make Sure Your Possessions are Adequately Protected:听Residents need to imagine the out-of-pocket cost of repurchasing their wind-damaged furniture, electronics, clothing, and other personal possessions after a hurricane. Whether you have听homeowners insurance,听condo insurance听or听renters insurance, your policy provides protection against loss or damage to personal property due to a hurricane.
听
Creating an听inventory of your belongings听and their value will make it easier to see if you are sufficiently insured for either the听replacement cost听or the听actual cash value听of the items situated at your residence. When you create a photo or video catalog of your home鈥檚 possessions, it expedites the insurance claims process if you sustain damage from a storm.
听
Make Your Property More Resilient:听Invest in items that will听harden your property听against wind damage, such as roof tie-downs, a wind-rated garage door, and storm shutters. Triple-I also recommends you have your roof inspected annually by a licensed and bonded contractor to make sure it can withstand high winds and torrential rains.
